Topic: What is Strategic Lending?
Volume in private debt has increased substantially since the financial crisis. Most of the these private debt funds have focused on sponsored backed deals or larger companies. An area of private debt which continues to be underserved includes strategic finance which focuses on complex event-driven situations typically involving non-sponsored businesses or businesses with unique/opaque characteristics (COVID dislocation, tax minimization, niche market, cross border, litigation, alternative collateral, revenue concentration, billings in progress, ecommerce, roll ups, etc.) Topics which will be discussed include: overview of strategic finance, characteristics of strategic finance deals, typical partners in transactions, and approach to deal making.

Mr. Hokayem joined Colbeck in 2013. Prior to joining Colbeck, he was a Director at PNC Capital Markets. While at PNC, he worked in numerous capacities as a corporate banker and portfolio manager across the corporate bank. Mr. Hokayem has also held positions in the risk management, contract finance, asset based lending, and specialty finance verticals. He has spent most of his career focused on private middle market companies. Additionally, Mr. Hokayem has lectured at New York University's Stern School of Business, taught at Wall Street Training, and spoken at multiple investment conferences. Mr. Hokayem holds a Master’s in Business Administration from New York University’s Stern School of Business where he graduated with highest distinction. Mr. Hokayem holds the rank of Eagle Scout and is actively involved with mentorship programs across New York City.
Matthew Prout, Managing Director and Sector Head, joined Falcon in September 2011. He was previously a Vice President for Culbro (family office) in a private equity role and with Banc of America Securities’ Leveraged Finance team. Mr. Prout has served on the Board of Directors of several companies, including current portfolio companies Sun Orchard, Chairmans Foods, Lakeview Farms and Mitra QSR. Prior affiliations include Lehman Brothers and Roynat Capital. Mr. Prout holds a B.S. degree from Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC-Chapel Hill.
